Toa Payoh MRT Station was the first MRT station in Singapore to be completed, topping out on August 5 1985, this makes it the first station with platform screen doors in the world. This station was among the first phase of MRT stations to be opened in Singapore in 1987. The first phase included the stations from Toa Payoh to Yio Chu Kang. Today, the concourse area bears the inauguration plate of Singapore's MRT system.
This station was one of 4 stations which participated in Exercise Northstar V, a mock terrorist exercise held on Jan 8 2006.
Falling tiles are a problem in Toa Payoh and Novena stations. Therefore the trademark bright yellow tiles of the station walls were replaced with a layer of plastic and paint of the same colour. The station had been refurbished.

2008 Smoke Incident
On December 18, 2008 at about 1.25 pm, passengers on board a southbound train were off-loaded after smoke was detected from one of the air-conditioning units in one of the train carriages. The train was removed from service after the passengers disembarked, causing a delay of 7 minutes. SMRT says that a leak in air-con refrigerant gas appeared as "smoke" and is non-toxic.[1]
2011 Owl Incident
On February 8, 2011 around the morning peak period , commuters were surprised to see a Barn Owl clinging on to a panel at the platform level of Toa Payoh MRT Station. The owl was subsequently captured by SMRT staff with the help of a commuter and was escorted off from the station in a box. The owl was unharmed in the process and train services were not affected. .[2]
